Walk On Water is a collaboration between Luke Rain and Trap Jesus, the two musical personas of writer/producer Lucas Raen Verver. Written at a time when Lucas was exploring genres and figuring out his artistic direction but before he understood the delineation between the EDM leaning Luke Rain project and the Hip Hop and RnB focused Trap Jesus.
It has styles that suggest an overlapping of the two brands: the lyric "I would walk on water for you" clearly represents Trap Jesus, but the melodic bass drop speaks much more to what the Luke Rain project would later become. When the song was written in 2018, however, the Luke Rain moniker, which had previously served as Lucas’ rap alias, was sitting unused. It wasn’t until 2019, with the advice of some musical heavyweights such as producers ill.Gates and Amadeus, that the Luke Rain brand was resurrected to give a home to the bass and dance tunes that didn’t really fit with the name Trap Jesus.
The first version of Walk On Water was originally composed for Producer Dojo's Cypher 006, titled "Get Outside" and curated by RIP Kenny (Now Luke's co-host on The Human Music Podcast). The challenge posted to participants was to use sounds from nature along with more traditional electronic music elements to evoke an emotion. The songs were then sequenced into a mixtape that conveyed an adventure. You can hear the whole mixtape on the Producer Dojo SoundCloud Channel.
Now, in 2021, armed with a higher level of engineering skills and a clearer picture of what the Luke Rain and Trap Jesus brands sound like, it’s the right time to give this song the release it deserves. One that pays respect to both sides of Lucas’ musical personality and blends hip hop, RnB and Bass in one smooth downtempo package. Because who says you can’t collab with yourself?
